In 2018, the investigative show Carte Blanche exposed honey producers for mixing sugar syrup into their products.

This misleading practice means that the honey customers had been buying was more like honey-flavoured sugar syrup. So much for the health benefits of eating pure honey!

An increasing amount of honey is being imported into South Africa from China, where quality control procedures are not always up to scratch. Unfortunately, there is virtually no way for customers to know whether the honey they are buying is the real deal.
